Palm Tree Care
Growing your own palm tree is not easy. It requires intimate care and attention for a healthy palm tree to majestically sit in your backyard. A prospective palm grower should be familiar with growing palms in containers, though potted plants ready to be transferred to earth are available from nurseries. Seedlings are grown in containers ranging in depth from 10 to 20 centimeters for the first two years. When the roots start coming out of the bottom, the saplings are repotted into a bigger container or into the ground. Palms must be planted in a hole twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as it was grown in a pot. This has to be cordoned off around the circumference with soil so that the surrounding area of the root acts as a water body for the palm. Care should be taken not to plant them close to buildings as the roots might disrupt the foundation of the building as it grows.
Drip or a bubble water supply is ideal, as the plants will have a constant reserve of water. The most important concern for palm tree farming is the quality of the soil. Like all other flora, the tree derives all its nutrients from the soil, and planting it in the right type of soil becomes crucial to its development. If your soil is not very nutrient, it can be strengthened with organic or inorganic fertilizers. Mycorrhizal fungi that exchange moisture and nutrients for its food are the best growth booster to the palm. Fair and judicious application of fertilizers will rectify manganese and potassium deficiency in the soil.
Before choosing a palm variety for your home, the average height the species obtains at maturity has to be considered. A 50-foot tall tree could tower over most of your house and disrupt overhead and underground cables. Choose a variety that will agree with the overall landscape of your locality, and at the same time, add uniqueness to your garden.
Another important factor is the weather and climate of your locality. Palms need adequate sunshine. While some varieties grow well in bright sunshine, others thrive in shady areas. It is best to check with experts on the weather tolerance, sunshine and compatibility of a particular variety before planting it.

Three Steps to an Environmentally Responsible Home
(ARA) - More and more homeowners are interested in having their homes built in an ecologically conscious manner. But what does that mean? What makes one house more environmentally sound than another? Whether you are buying a new home or upgrading your current residence, here are three simple ways to go green:
1. Look for products that don’t waste energy.
This isn’t just smarter for the environment — it’s smarter for your pocketbook. The insulators that play a large factor in our homes’ energy efficiencies are often overlooked. But the insulation used can significantly decrease your energy intake. Homeowners can upgrade insulation in their existing home to fill gaps and voids that allow warm air to escape in colder months
Companies like Dow offer a huge range of insulating products for new construction or remodels. Not only do foam and other expandable insulating products help preserve the energy you’re using in your home, but they can also offer noise reduction solutions between rooms.
2. Look for products that don’t waste resources.
Energy conservation is only one piece of the puzzle. To truly demonstrate concern for the environment requires utilizing materials that don’t cause an unnecessary drain of natural resources. Some of the most dramatic changes in the use of resources have come in the wood products arena. Manufacturers have developed highly sophisticated technology to minimize waste and improve product performance at the same time.
In hardwood flooring, Weyerhaeuser has taken a different approach to being efficient with natural resources. The company recently introduced a “new” hardwood called Lyptus.
According to Ian Firth from Weyerhaeuser Building Materials, “We spent five years conducting research and extensive testing to bring something new to the high-grade wood flooring industry that we can honestly say is 100 percent sustainable for the environment.”
When asked about the specific environmental benefits of Lyptus, Firth explained, “We selected a Eucalyptus hybrid as the primary species for Lyptus, but we relocated it to South America. In that climate, the trees we planted on plantations will grow to harvest size in approximately 15 years — two to three times faster than comparable premium hardwood species grown in colder climates. This enables us to produce more flooring material faster, while using less of the earth’s resources. The plantations are also interspersed with indigenous species to help maintain the natural ecosystem.”
Lyptus is being hailed as the newest premium hardwood. Comparable to cherry and mahogany, Lyptus is an extremely versatile hardwood product perfect for flooring, cabinetry, millwork or furniture. High-density characteristics enable Lyptus to take on virtually any stain or finish a homeowner desires. Making it good for the environment and easy on the eye.
3. Look for products that incorporate recycled materials.
It’s one thing to not waste raw materials; it’s another to actually turn waste into raw materials. Post industrial and post consumer waste is quickly becoming a viable source for creating innovative new building materials. When discarded items are given a second life instead of being tossed in the dumpster, environmental burdens can be reduced significantly.
Often it is wood that is reborn as a building product, specifically in exterior siding and trim products. When wood is recycled, these new siding products actually look like genuine wood, but they require much less maintenance and can carry up to a 30-year warranty.
“We use 50 percent post industrial and consumer recycled and recovered wood fibers in our TruWood siding and ChoiceTrim products,” says Less Richardson, vice president of The Collins Companies. “This allows us to maximize the utilization of natural resources while still offering products with the aesthetic appeal of solid wood — but with better product performance and less waste.”
Exterior surfaces such as decks are the perfect place to incorporate other recycled elements. Here again, Weyerhaeuser is at the cutting edge of the industry, introducing decking materials such as ChoiceDek. A composite made of 80 percent recycled plastic and wood fiber, ChoiceDek is virtually maintenance free and never splinters. Decorative railing systems, longer life spans, and an option for use in wet climates (such as dock, marina and boardwalk projects) make composite decking a great choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.
As long as demand for environmentally responsible products continues to grow, manufacturers will continue to develop innovative materials that protect the planet and perform better than their predecessors. New products allow homeowners to select products that help preserve natural resources — all without compromising on quality or style.

All About Riding Lawn Mowers
Most riding lawn mowers are machines fun to ride and extremely
cool to look at. However, they are just a dream for many
gardeners who can not afford one of these powerful gardening
equipment. A riding mower can be a practical time saving machine
for professionals as well as for beginner or amateur
landscapers. If you are on of those homeowners, lucky to
maintain a large yard, it can be a good idea to invest in a
riding mower.
Basics of lawn mowers
We will explain first the type of mowers on the market and then
which one would fit better with your current needs. Basic riding
mowers are actually those featuring rear engines. They use to
come with small horsepower engines, usually mounted under the
operator’s seat. These mowers have reasonable power sized
cutting blades and fit perfectly into small lawns with less than
1 acre.
The next level up is for medium horsepower riding lawn mowers;
these mowers use to include their engines at the front; there
can fit larger engines due to the space. They have a stronger
and faster cutting capacity. Medium riding mowers provide better
performance on hilly gardens and are the perfect complement for
yards between 1 and 3 acres. Commercial riding lawn mowers are
designed for really large yards, including sport fields, they
can be extremely expensive for homeowners and won’t really
provide their best performance in yards no bigger than 3 yards.
Here you can find some important points to have in mind before
you decide on the most suitable model that would better fit with
your necessities. The final choose will depend basically on:
* The type of terrain of your mowing area as well as the size of
it. And what other tasks would you like to do with your new
lawnmower?. It is also very important to know whether or not the
area includes slopes or hilly areas. The most flat is your
mowing area the better performance you will get from the machine.
* It is always extremely important to select a comfortable seat,
especially when you will be sitting for a long time. You will
save a lot on back injuries and other common diseases related
with sat jobs. There is no choice with that, it’s preferable
that the mower’s seat be comfortable enough, don’t make the
mistake that most do, it worth.
* Does the garden include trees or rocks that require permanent
change of direction during the mowing process? It’s very
important to find all the finishing touch to choose amongst
steering wheels and tires.
* There are different bagging or recycling grass options; here
you have mainly to mulching or to bagging. While mulching will
cut the grass into fine clippings and then give it back to your
lawn, providing nutrients to it, the second will just fill up a
rear bag, being easier for the rider to empty and replace it
with new ones.
* There are many attachments on the market to choose from. You
probably just need a riding lawnmower including normal features.
In addition, you can usually attach other features, like the
ones to remove snow during winter time.
