Team Poker
This past superbowl, I played in a team poker tournament. Even though acquired the 2nd most points for the day, I made no money whatsoever:
There were 4 teams of 5. Similarly to shoot-out tournaments, the game would begin as separate sit and go’s and condense to a final poker table. There were two 10-person sit and go’s running at a time, each were filled by random draws, so you could easily be playing against teammates.
The top 5 poker players from each sit and go would get points based on what rank they come in. Then after those two sit and go’s were completed, another round of randomly drawn sit and go’s would be played, with the exact same point distribution. The 10 players with the most points would get to the final table, where 1-5 would get cash prizes as well as points just like the previous round. A small side pool was set aside for the team that acquired the most points throughout all 3 rounds of play.
On my first table draw, I was the only of my team at my table. That meant many of my 9 opponents were teammates. Somehow I managed to get evade all team cohorts and came in first for 36 points. In the 2nd sit and go I played against 2 of my teammates and got 4th for 8 points, having 44 total. And in the last round I took a bad beat early and made no money and got no more points. My team ended up losing the points race by 8 points or so. We had 3/10 at the final table from our team. Another had 4/10 and had us beat in points, so they were our obvious competition.
Though the payouts and the team side pool was lopsided, it was an interesting formula that I would try again. Poker is such an individual sport, that the idea of team strategy is pretty novel. Especially when playing against your own teammates.

And finally, go see what the competition is doing. Spend an afternoon at the bookstore and see what titles have worked well for similar books in your genre.

Did you know that some words are easier to remember than others? Sound odd? Not really. Language experts will tell us that we just react differently to certain sounds. The letters K and P for example are what language experts call “plosives.” A plosive is a little bit of language that pops out of your mouth and draws attention to itself. A plosive is a “stopper” in language. A plosive makes us pause for emphasis when we say it. The letters B, C, D, K, P and T are all plosives.
What’s especially interesting is that brand names beginning with plosives have higher recall scores than non-plosive names. Several studies of the top 200 brand names have made that point. Examples: Bic, Coca-Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, Kodak, Pontiac, etc.
If you’ve picked a title for your book or a name for your business or product line that is “unusual” - you might want to check the meaning first. That goes for foreign translation as well. Here are a few examples of names that were chosen without the proper research:
In 1997 Reebok issued a mass recall of their new women’s running shoe dubbed “Incubus” - a savvy news reporter brought their attention to the fact that incubus means: “an evil spirit believed to descend upon and have sex with women while they sleep.”

Do Not Sell in the Resource Box!
Most people assume the resource box at the end of the article is their opportunity to sell.
You write an article and can sell your product or sell yourself via a link or email address in the resource box.
However this is NOT the most effective way to use the resource box. You can actually increase sales by not using this approach.
You really should not sell in the resource box but rather get the interested visitor to take further action.
You ‘give’ with your article but you try to ‘receive’ with your resource box. But what should you receive?
Instead of trying to sell a product directly through the resource box, there are more effective techniques that provide long-term benefits.
Here are 3 offers that you can provide in your resource box:
1. A free email course. This way you get subscribers and you can then market your product throughout the email course.
2. A free ebook download. Promote your product via links throughout the ebook. Also, offer the email course in the ebook as well.
3. An ezine packed with valuable content published either weekly, twice a month or monthly. Then promote your product with ezine ads throughout each issue. But make sure you do not go overboard with ezine ads. Generally, the fewer the better.
The resource box is an invaluable marketing tool but is often used for making direct sales.
However, my own research has shown that by providing offers through the resource box rather than the product itself, your sales will actually increase.
In the resource box provide an offer for readers to take further action.

Blast Your Writing Blocks

How many words do you write a day? Some novelists manage 2,000
words a day or even more, but most writers feel they’ve done a
good job if they can turn out 500 to 1,000 words.
If you’re writing zero words a day, you’re blocked. Writers get
blocked because they’re anxious, or because they don’t have
enough information.
=> Dealing with anxiety
Anxiety can show up in various forms, either physical, mental, or
emotional. You may feel tired, or have a head-ache. You may
decide that you’re bored with what you’re writing, or so
depressed you can’t think. Or maybe you convince yourself that
you’re just too busy (the lawn needs mowing, and you should spend
time with the kids). You’ll do your writing tomorrow.
The anxiety block is hard to manage because you often don’t
realize that it is a block. You have terrific reasons for not
writing. No one would expect you to write with a migraine, would
they? And you really do need to mow the lawn.
The only way I’ve found to manage this block is to be tough on
myself. I set myself a daily word target, usually 1,000. I may
not reach that target, but before I go to bed, I MUST write 500
words. Every day.
Paradoxically, I’ve found that even when I’m not in the mood to
write, or when I have a headache that would fell an ox, I feel
better when I’ve written my 500 words. I often go on to write the
full 1,000.
The most pernicious anxiety block occurs when you’re convinced
your writing is worthless. This block may happen as a result of
chaos in some other area of your life: perhaps with
relationships, or illness, or finances.
Handling this block takes careful management. First, try to see
that it’s a block, which has happened because of the stress
you’re under. Your writing is fine — you’ve just lost
perspective. If you can convince yourself of this, it’s a major
achievement.
Try to write anyway, even if you feel your writing is trash. If
you can’t, take a break from writing without feeling guilty.
Relax, exercise, eat well, and indulge in a few movies, or a
favourite hobby.
If this block lasts for more than a month or two, visit a
therapist. There’s no shame in this, and seeing someone can save
you endless months of frustration.
=> Eliminating the “no info” block
You can also get blocked because you don’t have enough
information. You’re trying to write the final draft, instead of
tackling the writing process draft by draft.
Here’s a handy way to prevent the “no info” block by taking your
writing through clearly defined stages:
A. First draft: your thinking draft. In this draft, you write
whatever you like. You’re aiming for quantity here, rather than
quality.
B. Your second draft. Your first draft has shown you what you
want to say. In this draft, you have a crack at saying it.
C. Your clean-up draft. Your final draft. You’ve said what you
want to say, now you get a chance to say it better. You clean up
the redundancies and spice it up.
In practice, stage B may have several additional drafts, as many
as you need: B1, B2, and more.
The easiest way to kill the no-info block for good is to allow
yourself to write badly. Every day. This is because writing is
hard when you try to think and write at the same time. Allow
yourself to think on paper for as many drafts as you need. Then
write the final draft with confidence.
=> Writing cycles
This isn’t a block, it’s a process. Everything happens in cycles,
even your writing. Sometimes your writing catches fire. You’re
inspired. At other times, writing is like wading through
quicksand, and it takes you forever to write 200 words.
Accept this. When you’re in the low part of the cycle, aim lower.
If your target was 1,000 words a day, make it 200. Or even 50.
Blocks are a part of the writer’s life. Use the above tools to
write your way out of them. As incredible as it may seem when
you’re in the middle of a block, the day will dawn when your
block is not even a memory, and you can confidently say: “There’s
no such thing as writer’s block!”
